The Ultimate Guide to a Cape Town Staycation | The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa

Cape Town has all the ingredients of an unforgettable holiday, which begs the question: when you seriously need a break from the day-to-day, who says you need to go very far? Living in one of the world’s most beautiful countries means extraordinary landscapes, coastal adventures, world-class food, and plenty of sunshine are already on the doorstep. A Cape Town staycation is the perfect excuse to make the most of it, swapping everyday routines for Atlantic sunsets, mountain walks, long lunches, spa treatments, and a few blissful days beside the ocean. No airport required. On the coastal road beyond Camps Bay, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa occupies an exceptional position between the Twelve Apostles mountain range and the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, the hotel feels removed from the pace of central Cape Town while keeping the city’s beaches, neighbourhoods, restaurants, and major attractions within easy reach. For South African residents planning a weekend away or a short coastal escape, it provides an opportunity to rediscover just how much Cape Town has to offer. Why Cape Town is Made for a StaycationFew cities bring nature and urban life together as successfully as Cape Town. A single day might begin with a mountain walk, continue with lunch beside the sea, and finish over dinner in the city, with galleries, vineyards, beaches, and historic neighbourhoods all adding to the possibilities. The Twelve Apostles’ position on Victoria Road is particularly well suited to exploring the Atlantic Seaboard. Camps Bay is a short drive away, making it easy to combine time on the beach with lunch or dinner overlooking the Atlantic. The neighbourhood has plenty of established favourites, from seafood at Codfather Seafood & Sushi to contemporary dining at Mantra Café, while the promenade is ideal for an evening drink as the sun begins to set. Continue towards the city and Clifton’s famous beaches provide another tempting place to stop, particularly on warm, still days.Camps BayFurther north, Sea Point offers a different side of coastal Cape Town. Its promenade is popular for walking and cycling, while the neighbourhood has developed an excellent collection of cafés, bakeries, and restaurants. The V&A Waterfront is particularly easy to incorporate into a stay, with complimentary scheduled transfers from the hotel operating throughout the day. Allow a few hours to explore the Silo District and Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, the world’s largest museum dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, housed within a spectacularly reimagined grain silo. The museum is open daily, while African citizens can currently visit free on Wednesdays when arriving between 10am and 1pm with valid identification.Zeitz Museum of Contemporary ArtAt weekends, combine a museum visit with the Oranjezicht City Farm Market at Granger Bay, where local farmers and artisanal food producers gather on Saturdays and Sundays. With everything from fresh produce to prepared dishes, it is a particularly good option for a relaxed local breakfast or lunch before exploring the rest of the Waterfront.Mountains on Your DoorstepTurn away from the Atlantic and the landscape changes immediately. The Twelve Apostles forms part of the Table Mountain range, giving the hotel an extraordinary natural backdrop and placing some of Cape Town’s most celebrated scenery close at hand. The Azure RestaurantA staycation is an excellent excuse to revisit Table Mountain itself. Take the cableway to the summit for panoramic views across the city and peninsula, or explore one of the many walking routes around Table Mountain National Park. Cape Town’s weather can change quickly, so it is worth checking conditions before setting out, particularly as cableway operations can be affected by poor weather. Tickets can also be purchased online in advance. For a shorter outing, Lion’s Head is one of Cape Town’s best-known hikes, rewarding walkers with sweeping views over the City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, and Table Mountain. Those seeking a gentler morning can explore the lower slopes and viewpoints before returning to the coast. The setting also means that nature remains part of the experience when staying at the hotel. Indigenous fynbos, mountain scenery, ocean views, and the changing colours of the Atlantic create a sense of escape without requiring a long journey from the city.Explore Cape Town's Botanical SideAnother rewarding way to experience the landscape is at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Set aside a morning to explore its indigenous planting, walking trails, and mountain views, including the elevated Tree Canopy Walkway. It offers a gentler alternative to a mountain hike while still immersing visitors in the remarkable plant life of the Cape Floral Kingdom.Kirstenbosch National Botanical GardenFollow the Atlantic CoastOne of the pleasures of staying at The Twelve Apostles is having one of Cape Town’s great scenic roads directly outside.Head south along Victoria Road and the city gradually gives way to a wilder stretch of coastline. Llandudno, with its granite boulders and white sand, is a beautiful stop on a sunny day. Continue south to Hout Bay, stopping for a walk around the harbour or lunch beside the water. From here, the road continues onto Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the Cape Peninsula’s great scenic routes, with viewpoints overlooking Hout Bay and the Atlantic. Continue towards Noordhoek for its long sweep of white sand before retracing the coastal route back to the hotel.Guests with a full day available can extend the journey towards Chapman’s Peak Drive, Noordhoek, and the communities and beaches further south. It is an easy way to turn a short hotel stay into a miniature road trip, while still returning to the same room at the end of the day.See a Different Side of the CityA staycation is also an opportunity to visit parts of Cape Town that are often overlooked during everyday life.Bo-KaapSpend a morning exploring the colourful streets and Cape Malay heritage of Bo-Kaap before continuing into the city centre. Cape Town’s museums offer an important window into the city’s complex history, with the District Six Museum providing a particularly moving account of the community displaced from the area under apartheid. Guided museum visits and site walks led by former residents offer an especially personal perspective on this chapter of Cape Town’s past. Oranjezicht and De Waterkant offer further options for food, shopping, and leisurely exploring. For those happy to travel a little further, the Cape Winelands can also be incorporated into a longer stay, although there is plenty to fill two days without leaving Cape Town itself. The key is to resist trying to cover everything. Choose one part of the city you have not explored recently, combine it with time outdoors, and leave enough room in the itinerary to enjoy the hotel. Two Nights to Rediscover Cape TownA well-planned staycation does not need to fill every hour. In fact, two nights provide an ideal amount of time to combine exploring Cape Town with enjoying the hotel itself. The Atlantic Terrace PoolCreated exclusively for South African residents, the Two-Night Breakaway Offer at The Twelve Apostles makes a local escape all the more tempting. Guests are welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine or iced tea before settling into their coastal surroundings, while each morning begins with a complimentary South African breakfast, complete with freshly harvested oysters and sparkling wine. For stays booked between 1st April and 30th September, the package also includes a two-course lunch in The Café Grill once during the stay, excluding beverages and gratuities and subject to seasonal availability.California rolls platterComplimentary scheduled transfers to the V&A Waterfront operate daily from 8am until 9.30pm, opening up plenty of possibilities for exploring Cape Town while leaving the car behind.A two-night itinerary might begin with an afternoon spent entirely at the hotel, followed by dinner and sunset views over the Atlantic. The following morning can be devoted to Table Mountain, Camps Bay, or the city centre, before returning for a spa treatment and a relaxed evening. On departure day, there is still time for breakfast, a coastal walk, or a final few hours by the pool.Make Time for the SpaA Cape Town staycation can be as much about switching off as sightseeing, and The Spa at The Twelve Apostles makes a compelling case for dedicating part of the weekend entirely to relaxation.Treatments draw on Red Carnation’s B|Africa philosophy, which incorporates indigenous African plant extracts alongside ingredients inspired by the natural environment. The spa’s facilities and treatment rituals create a restorative counterpoint to days spent walking, swimming, or exploring the city.Unwind at The SpaBooking a treatment for the first afternoon can be an effective way to mark the transition from everyday life into holiday mode. Alternatively, save the spa for the second day, returning from a morning of exploring Cape Town for an afternoon devoted to wellness. For a staycation centred primarily around rest, there is little need to venture far at all. Ocean views, swimming pools, spa time, and leisurely meals allow the hotel to become the destination. An Escape That Feels Further From HomeAt The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, escaping the everyday does not require a plane ticket. With the Atlantic stretching out in one direction and the Twelve Apostles rising behind you, it is remarkable how far from home you can feel while still having the best of Cape Town within easy reach. Two nights are enough to watch the sun set over the ocean, savour a long breakfast, rediscover a favourite corner of the city, find somewhere new, and dedicate a few well-earned hours to the spa. And let’s be honest, you deserve it. Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery, a little indulgence, and the reminder that one of the world’s most beautiful destinations has been on your doorstep all along.
